NY City

The World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, New York was a set of seven buildings that included the Twin Towers , and 5 other buildings. The Twin Towers were destroyed in the September 11, 2001 Al- Qaeda suicide terrorist attacks. On that fateful morning, nineteen Al- Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners: American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and American Airlines Flight 93. Two of the airliners were crashed into the Twin Towers . It is estimated that there were approximately 15,000 people in the two towers, and 2,605 died that fateful day, including firefighters and other rescuers.
American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower at 8:46 am, just 47 minutes after the flight departed. The flight boarded in Newark , New Jersey and was bound for San Francisco . Flight 11 hit the North Tower between the 93rd and 99th floor level. The North tower burned for 102 minutes and then at 10:28, it collapsed. All of the 92 plane passengers, including the five hijackers and eleven crewmen, died. The debris from the North Tower burned and eventually led to the demise of the 7th World Trade Center building.
The South Tower was hit between the levels of 77 and 85 by United Airlines Flight 175 at 9:03. The flight originated in Boston, Massachusetts and was bound for Los Angeles , California and departed at from 8:20 Boston’s Logan Airport . The South Tower burned for nearly an hour until it collapsed at 9:59. Unlike the North Tower , one of the three stairwells in the South Tower was still intact initially after the crash because it was hit at an angle instead of straight on. This stairwell saved 18 lives until it collapsed with the rest of the building. There were no survivors on the plane, and 65 passengers, including the terrorists, and 9 crew members died.
Over 90 countries lost citizens in the Twin Tower attacks.
The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) deployed half of the department to the site of destruction, along with the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the Port Authority police. The NYPD aviation unit relayed the evacuation notice to the NYPD officers in the building, and most of those officers were able to evacuate safely before the buildings collapsed. However, this information was not relayed to the FDNY due to faulty and incompatible communications. After the North tower collapsed, FDNY issued evacuation notices, but due to faulty radio repeater systems, most of the firefighters never heard the warnings. Soon after the failed evacuation warnings, a search and rescue operation was induced to recover the firefighters and any other civilians caught within the rubble. By the end of May 2002 over nine months later, the World Trade Center Site was cleared of all debris.
At least 200 people were forced to jump and fell to their deaths. Hundreds were killed on the impact of the crash and the rest were trapped in the buildings and ultimately died during the collapse.
Ground was broken on November 8, 2009 and the memorial is set to begin construction on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Out of respect, the two impacted routes were assigned new and different names.
